Nunthorpe Stakes winner Ortensia has been retired, trainer Paul Messara has announced.

The eight-year-old landed her first Group One success in Australia in 2011 and progressed to claim the Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan the following March.

Sent to Britain after that run, Ortensia disappointed at Royal Ascot but bounced back to win the King George Stakes at Goodwood before tasting Group One victory on the Knavesmire last August.

Ortensia failed to sparkle in one final start at Haydock and has not recaptured her best in Australia, signing off after finishing unplaced in the race named in her honour at Scone on Saturday.

Messara tweeted: "Today we say goodbye to Ortenisa. A great mare for our stable. 11starts, 3 G1s in 3 countries, 1 Gr2 and a Listed Stakes race. Ortensia has a new job now as a mum."
