Preview navan 7th Oct

There could be some potential Classic clues from Ballydoyle at Navan on Wednesday.

Aidan O'Brien has used the juvenile maidens at this fixture as a springboard to stardom for the likes of Soldier Of Fortune and Marvellous, and one that fits the bill this year is Cook Islands.

The Fastnet Rock colt went into lots of notebooks when fourth, beaten just half a length, on his introduction at the Curragh recently and he holds a Derby entry.

So, too, do his inexperienced stablemates Birthplace and Ineffable, who join him in the line up for the Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C & G) Maiden, while Etched is the main flagbearer for the yard in the fillies' version.

The daughter of Dansili is out of a half-sister to Derby hero Pour Moi and shaped with lots of promise on her Naas debut.

Her close relative Giant Redwood belatedly makes his first racecourse appearance in the Come Racing On The Active Retirement Raceday 21st October Maiden, but he will need to be decent to get to grips with the Joe Murphy-trained Swamp Fox, as well as Jim Bolger's filly Deontas.

Prospector is yet another well-related Ballydoyle representative on show but he was disappointing at Roscommon and there are safer options in the closing Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden, namely Bolger's battle-hardened Vintage Charm.

The action gets under way at 2.05 with the Kells Maiden, in which Zaindera strives to go one better than she did in a Cork handicap most recently.

Danz Gift, Sweetest Taboo, La Canaada and Little Sweetheart were all behind her that day and they lock horns again in the Trim Apprentice Handicap.

The Meath Handicap is quite competitive, with O'Brien's Cocoon topping the weights, but the one to beat might be The Nutcracker.

Tom Gibney's five-year-old scored quite cosily over course and distance last month, although she has a 15lb rise to defy.
