Former champion hunter chaser Mossey Joe could bid to get back on track at Down Royal next week.

Barry Connell splashed out £160,000 on the 11-year-old at the sales last January but the gelding has failed to live up to that hefty price tag so far.

Enda Bolger's charge missed the Cheltenham Festival, but did run a fine race to finish third at Aintree in the Fox Hunters' Chase.

He disappointed subsequently when sent off a short price at Cork and emptied quickly on his return this season in a point-to-point at Ballinaboola last month.

"He's got an entry at Down Royal but we won't make a decision until nearer the time. It will probably be just before declaration time," said Bolger.

"He's been so disappointing and we are doing everything we can to get him back on an even keel. He seems in good form in himself at the moment.

"He stopped to a walk last time in a point-to-point and we found a lot of mucus when we scoped him.

"We think we might be on top of that now but he's just delicate. Trying to find the key to him is the problem."

Bolger is set to be represented in the Down Royal contest by another leading light in the hunter chase arena, On The Fringe.

The nine-year-old was third behind Tammys Hill at Cheltenham last March before outclassing his rivals in the Champion Hunters Chase at Punchestown and subsequently at Killarney.

"Hopefully he'll go there (Down Royal)," reported Bolger. "He won it last year and that's the plan."
