The utterance of Ruby Walsh after Rattan won at this year's Listowel Festival came to mind at Lingstown point-to-point last Sunday. "I've won a head so I'm a hero but if I was beaten a head I would be a gobshite," was somewhat applicable after Jamie Codd's amazing success on Bothair Clei in the Kilmore Potatoes Ltd Winners Of Two.
Albeit the margin of victory for Bothair Clei at the line was a 'clear-cut' length but backers of the favourite would have be forgiven for having a private moan to themselves in the rain as Beake Boy and Our Ned made the best of their way home.
That pair had a clear advantage as the runners raced around the bottom of the track at the seaside venue.
However there's hardly a rider that knows the Lingstown, Tomhaggard, County Wexford venue better than Codd. With Beake Boy and Our Ned not exactly flying over the last, Bothair Clei suddenly had a chance.
The run-in at the Killinick Harriers meeting is longer than some realise and Codd miraculously got the Snurge gelding up near the finish to score by a length and three lengths from Beake Boy and Our Ned.
Midleton handler Donie Murphy cut a relieved figure at the number one spot in the aftermath as Codd (had a treble on the day) explained that his mount never really travelled.
Bothair Clei, placed on the track, is now three from five 'between the flags' and he clearly has the right attitude.
Codd's other wins were on Liz Doyle's Mac’s Return (see separate story) and on Ger Corrigan's Balynaclash Warior in the finale. Corrigan was of course on the mark recently in Thomastown with Oscar Amy.
Codd tweeted on Sunday evening: "Massive well done to all at Lingstown today,everyone pulled together in tough conditions and got through 9 races,it's what p2ps r all about." (EM)
