A second Irish trainer, Pat Hughes, is facing court charges relating to the possession of substances contrary to regulations.

Hughes appeared in Carlow District Court on February 13 on eight charges of possession of animal remedies following an inspection at his Fenniscourt yard in February 2012.

The case was adjourned until May 8.

Fellow handler Philip Fenton is due to appear at Carrick-on-Suir District Court on Thursday charged with similar offences in a case being brought by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Denis Egan, chief executive of the Irish Turf Club, said: "We are aware of the Pat Hughes case. We are watching with interest and if anything comes out of it, we will take the appropriate action."
