Death of Joe Malone

The death has occurred of Joe Malone, former jump jockey and head man with Dermot Weld.

Malone was a successful jump jockey with legendary Curragh trainer Mick Connolly and Charlie Weld, father of Dermot Weld. A Dublin-native but Kildare resident all his life, he joined Weld’s Rosewell House in 1964 and was a key figure in its success for many years.

Speaking at Gowran today, Pat Smullen, Weld’s stable jockey, stated “Joe will be sorely missed. I’ve known him as long as I’ve been in Dermot’s and he was the type of man who you could speak to about anything. He was an excellent judge of horses and was a great horseman and asset to the yard. I am absolutely devastated to hear of his passing.”
