An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Phyllis, ridden by Lilly Pinchin and trained by Harriet Dickin in ‘The Glentucky Derby Novices Hurdle Race’ where Phyllis raced in last place and detached from the field and appeared to be tenderly handled before refusing at the final hurdle.

The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Phyllis revealed no abnormalities.

The rider stated that the instructions were to drop Phyllis at the rear of the field and to settle the filly as she had over-raced in her previous run.

Pinchin added that she restrained the mare detached from the field to settle her and she felt entering the second circuit the mare became more tractable and she started to squeeze her to make up ground.

As she attempted to make up the deficit, Phyllis progressively hung badly to the right preventing her to ride the mare effectively.

The trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that she was satisfied that the ride accorded with those instructions.

Their explanations were noted but Pinchin was fined £140 for failing to report at scales that Phyllis hung badly right.

The sponsorship in relation to TARDEE (IRE), trained by LJ Morgan, did not comply with the Sponsorship Code of Conduct.

LJ Morgan was warned as to the responsibility to ensure that the correct sponsorship is carried.
