Cosmic Year Aims to Rebound in Goodwood Return

Cosmic Year will drop in grade next month at Goodwood, targeting the Group Three Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes over a mile.

The Kingman colt had impressed earlier in the season with a win in the King Charles II Stakes and a solid second in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. However, a disappointing run in the Prix Jean Prat has prompted a change in direction.

“The City of York Stakes is on the cards but it is all dependent on his next run.

Trainer Harry Charlton explained: “He didn’t run his race obviously (at Deauville) and we’ll hope for a better performance next time.” He confirmed the colt has recovered well and is expected to reappear in the Thoroughbred Stakes, rather than the shorter HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes.

Skimmer’s Progress Hinges on Softer Ground

Fellow Juddmonte-owned runner Skimmer will remain on the sidelines until conditions suit, with a tilt at the Great Voltigeur Stakes still under consideration.

Skimmer is unbeaten in two starts — a debut win at Leicester followed by a smooth novice success at Kempton. But Charlton is unwilling to risk him on firm ground.

“We wouldn’t go up there if the ground was like it is now,” said Charlton. “I think he’s a big horse and he’s probably not one for firm ground... we obviously know it’s not long until September and surely the weather will relent at some point.”

He compared Skimmer’s development to that of his brother Okeechobee, noting that “he’s coming into his own middle of his three-year-old career into his four-year-old career as it were.”
