A beloved figure in the racing world, Trueshan suffered a fatal injury during Tuesday’s Goodwood Cup, leaving trainer Alan King and the racing community devastated.

Alan King Grateful for Outpouring of Support After Trueshan’s Passing

Alan King described the death of Trueshan as a “freak accident” and found comfort in the overwhelming support from fans and colleagues. The popular stayer was pulled up halfway through the Goodwood Cup by Hollie Doyle, with the injury proving fatal. Trueshan had previously won the race in 2021 and was making his 35th career start.

“I knew he was popular, but there’s been well over 200 messages and I’m still getting them now and it means an awful lot,” King said. “It has helped me and it has helped the staff.”

He also reflected on Trueshan’s soundness and reliability over the years, emphasizing how rare it was for the horse to miss training or suffer any injuries—apart from days they chose not to run him due to ground conditions.

“Freak Accident” and a Peaceful Goodbye

King was adamant that Trueshan’s death was purely accidental and not related to training or track conditions. He praised the veterinary team for their care and professionalism in Trueshan’s final moments. “It was peaceful, it was calm and they were professional and it means a lot,” he said.

Trueshan will be buried at Barbury Castle next to other stable greats Viking Flagship, Balder Succes, and Katchit. “He’s been a friend and a very straightforward horse to train,” King concluded.
