The third running of the Equine MediRecord Student Derby Handicap produced a rousing finish as David Garrick always prominent under Paddy Barlow who was representing the University of Nottingham, just got the better of the Cillian McConnell-ridden Albatala

The latter gained a narrow lead as the pair locked horns in the final furlong but Barlow, who has ridden plenty of winners in point-to-points and under rules in Britain, galvanised his mount to prevail by a nose at odds of 10/1.

Fearghal and Bronagh Eastwood own the Zoffany gelding who is trained by Eddie & Patrick Harty and Harty snr said: "It was a long time overdue (since he won last). His owner is a really loyal supporter of the yard. He has had two results go against him by narrow margins, so it was good to get this one.

"The plan was to try and win on the flat then go back and have another cut over hurdles back in Down Royal in November."
