McCreery strikes with Liberty

Sun 12th Jul 2009, 15:00

Former Kildare footballer Willie McCreery was an apt winner at Dundalk on the day of the Leinster football final.

McCreery, who won two Leinster titles with Kildare in 1998 and 2000, saddled Liberty Island to claim the opening five furlong sprint.

Davy Moran bounced his mount out in front and he stayed on well in the final furlong to post a length-and-a-quarter victory over Trotting Weasel

"It was worth coming up here instead of going to Croker!" quipped McCreery.

"He's an improving horse and the key was the draw. He needs fast ground and hasn't got it all summer. He's as honest as they come."
