Season finishes at Punchestown
There are 5 days left of the current 2009/2010 National Hunt Season, and heading into the Punchestown Festival, some of this year's awards are still up for decision.
Willie Mullins is set to retain the Champion Trainers’ Title, for the third consecutive occasion, having already had 134 winners and twice the prize money of nearest rival Noel Meade.
Mullins' stable jockey Ruby Walsh is also set to retain his title, despite being out of action since breaking his arm at Aintree. His 108 winners leave him 17 clear of his nearest opponent Davy Russell. It will be Walsh' eighth Jockeys' Championship in all, and his sixth in a row.
In the Champion Owners’ Title, perennial champion J.P. McManus faces an uphill battle as Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown House Stud looks likely to earn his first title and end the Limerick man’s sequence. With 43 wins, one less than their rival, giving him a haul of just over €840,000, Gigginstown House Stud has a cushion of approximately €160,000 to defend ahead of the Punchestown Festival.
Dual Champion Amateur rider Patrick Mullins leads Nina Carberry by three winners (44-41) in this season's Amateur's title, while Shane Hassett leads Conor Maxwell 18-13 at the head of the Conditional Jockeys list.
Brian Kavanagh, HRI Chief Executive commented: “HRI is delighted to be recognising the achievements of our top owners, trainers and jockeys, who are truly elite international athletes, at the culmination of another great season. We look forward to the presentation of the magnificent perpetual trophies on Saturday 24th April on the concluding day of what promises to be a fantastic week’s racing at the Punchestown National Hunt Festival”.
Presentations will be made between the 3.45pm race and 4.25pm race in the Punchestown parade ring on Saturday.
