Joseph O’Brien and JJ Slevin teamed up for a double at Punchestown this afternoon when Cottesloe Sunshine ran out a shock winner of the Listed Close Brothers Irish EBF Mares Novice Hurdle.
The Getaway mare had finished mid-division in handicap company when last seen at the Dublin Racing festival in February and went to post a 33/1 shot today.
She jumped to the front over the second last in the two-miler and asserted down to the last as 8/13 favourite Sixandahalf gave chase.
Cottesloe Sunshine galloped on strongly to the line as Mozzies Sister stayed on to take second, three-and-a-half lengths behind.
O’Brien said:- “A great ride by JJ and a very tough filly. She jumped well today and I’m delighted for Nick (Fahy, owner) and his family who are here today.
“We were coming here fresh and a lot of the competitors had been to all the Festivals over the last few months. We knew that was going to be a positive for us.
“I’d be lying if I said I expected her to win but we thought we might run well.
“She’ll have her summer holidays now and then we’ll discuss what happens in the autumn.”
Slevin told RTE:- “Joseph half fancied her in fairness to him and he said he had her coming here in good shape.
“She’s a game little thing, she’s small and narrow but she can gallop.
“She’s really clever to jump, she listens to you and she always does what you want. We didn’t do a whole lot of jumping with her, the lads that had her pre-training did a great job with her.
“It was very straightforward, she got into a great rhythm and she was brilliant.
“It’s great for Nick and Orla (Fahy) that own her. They are great people to ride for.
“She was my first winner back on the 21st of December and they had no hesitation about putting me up on her so fair play to them.”
