Scienter wins for Roche & the Powers'
Scienter overcame a long absence to take the Family Bank Holiday Racing INH Flat Race under Kevin Power for Christy Roche. Owned by Power's father John, the five-year-old son of Shantou made his debut at Galway last July, finishing sixth of twenty behind Cul Baire. Running for the first time since, he was 5/1 this morning with Paddy Power, opening on-course at 4/1 (touching 9/2) before going off the 10/3 second favourite. He chased the leaders in the early stages and he was third at the halfway point. He was ridden to challenge three furlongs from home, hitting the front over two furlongs out, keeping on well from there to score by two and a quarter lengths. Masirann kept on well to take second at 20/1 under Rachel Blackmore for John Hanlon while You Can’t Catch Me (40/1) finished a length back in third under Paul Power for Kieran Purcell, but was subsequently disaqualified (see below). The David O’Brien trained Truth Be Told was sent off the 3/1 favourite but he could only manage a disappointing fourteenth. Kevin Power said afterwards: "He ran a lovely race the first day at Galway when he wasn’t fully fit and he’s had his share of problems since. "It was nice to get the win and hopefully he will win a few hurdles" Fri 12th Jul
I wasn't really expecting that. I thought Michael Winters' horse (Another Rebel) was the one to beat so when he came out it was great,. Jack said he was going to make all and try to get things his own way, and he did. He jumped from fence to fence and he was in great form at home. I honestly didn't think he'd win today, but we'll take it. He won a chase here this day last year and he has been a great little servant, we are delighted. He is lucky little horse for us, he is tough. It's the lads at home that do all the work, it's easy for me to be doing the talking but I've three great lads at home and we are delighted if we get a few winners. We might go to Navan on Saturday for a hurdle race. He might just go there for a bit of nicer ground. You can't beat an honest horse who jumps well. It's great for Paul (Mullins) who has been a lucky owner for us. This horse lives outside. It's the only place that suits him, he can't be inside. He is like a goat, he is healthy.

You can't beat a bit of luck, and they are there to be jumped. I told Brian to stay out of trouble, and it was just as well he did. This horse lost his way and we left him outside. You can't beat a bit of fresh air and some grass, and he's only back in about four weeks. He would love the ground a bit better than today. If we get middling ground he could run in another chase, and if not we'll put him away for next year.
Norman Lee
It's good to be meeting ye (the press) again! . He was overdue that and we fancied him and had a few quid on him. He might go for an Opportunity Handicap Hurdle on the Sunday at Galway next and is a little horse that is improving all the time. Adrian gave him a perfectly judged ride and is a top class rider and a gentleman to ride for you. He does what he is told and that's all you can ask for. We've had a great twenty-four hours and I can't really talk as my voice is gone from roaring at them! . We've him (Bashful Beauty) and Supreme Vic for Galway and both are owned by Paul Mullins from Tuam.
Norman Lee
