Sharestan too classy in the Celebration

Oxxs newcomer lands gamble
The opening Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital Maiden at The Curragh this evening went to the John Oxx trained newcomer Sharestan under Johnny Murtagh. Fri 24th Jun
He's good over a mile. He won over a mile and two here recently but he didn't really stay in the heavy ground. He's adaptable ground-wise and he may get a mile and a quarter on fast ground. On soft to heavy a mile is no worry to him and he is a horse that has the potential to step-up in grade. He has to prove that but he went some way to doing that today. We thought that he was a horse that could step-up into the mid-teens (in the ratings) and once you get to that level you have more options.

It was testing and the ground was very gluey in the straight. That was probably the limit of his stamina and he is probably better coming back in trip. He was suited by the slow fractions and he managed to grind it out. When he ran against Famous Name he handled the good ground well, so he is versatile and he proved me wrong. He wouldn't run over 1m 2f on testing ground again he wants good ground. Off his rating of 108 he was entitled to do that but he didn't do anything spectacular. I'd like to think he is still capable of better but he has to prove it. We might try him in the Group 3, International Stakes over a mile and two or there is a Listed race over a mile for him as well.

He will be stepped up to Listed class next and will go for the Heritage Stakes at Leopardstown in three weeks' time. He is still inexperience and a bit green. It's hard to know his best trip until he sharpens up. He goes on soft ground but it remains to be seen whether he goes on better ground. He has a bit of talent and hopefully we will see it this season.
John M Oxx
Sharestan did well to win as he wasn't in a great position with other horses around him. However he will have learned plenty from that. We always liked him and while he was ready to run last year, he got an injury which held him up. There's a 1m2f race at Fairyhouse in two weeks time for him now.
