Skukuza's expedition yields Celebration success

Skukuza a third English winner at the Curragh

we ran Skukuza in the Britannia Stakes last year where he ran a great race but it really jarred him up so we couldn’t risk him on that fast ground at Ascot this year. It was a brave decision not to run when you are one of the favourites for the Hunt Cup but the plan has worked. He’s a Listed winner now so we are growing. Ryan really wanted to get a lead but he didn’t expect any pace, so he said I might have to make my own running which he did. The horse has never done that, but he did everything right and I think the further he went the further he was going to win. He likes coming back here for classic days so maybe there is something for him on Oaks day!

We’re delighted. We came here for the rain and it came at the right time,. He deserved to win this. He got injured in the Britannia, which he ran so well in, and things haven’t gone right for him. He’s a smart horse and I’m delighted for my team and obviously for Mrs Rupert. Possibly the Hunt Cup next. It’s a nice pot, a great day and a long time since I had a winner here. I haven’t had many runners here. We won a few classics here but it’s seems like a while ago. He had come down a pound or two but he’s only run twice since the Britannia. We had to put him away for the whole year. The key to nice horses are owners being patient and she was patient. We gave him all the time in the world and here we go.
