Chaucer gets home in tactical opener
Well-supported Ballydoyle newcomer Geoffrey Chaucer made a winning debut in the opening mile maiden at Leopardstown but had to work to get the job done. Thu 18th Jul
That is probably her right trip. She was second in the Epsom Oaks but was just running out of stamina at the line, and she didn't get the mile and a half in the Oaks at the Curragh. She has been working well before this, and I was confident that she would be difficult to beat. I will have to have a word with Sheikh Hamdan but her end of season target will probably be the Breeders Cup Fillies & Mares, and we will have a look at the Prix de l'Opera.

I thought she did it very nicely for a filly having her first run back. It was a very true run race and Pat said she gave a little blow half a furlong down but she got her second wind and ran on nicely. I'll have a word with Sheikh Hamdan (winning owner), it's his decision but I would be encouraging him to have a crack at the Epsom Oaks. I appreciate he has the favourite for the race (Taghrooda) already. She handled that ground but she'll really love fast ground. She's a good filly and there's lots to look forward too.

We have some lovely two-year-olds this year. Pat (Smullen) gave her his usual confident ride. She's a lovely filly . very talented. I think she's a Group filly. She has the potential to go right to the top. She's beautiful . a stunning mover with lots of gears and speed . a stayer with speed and she'll be a lovely staying filly for next year. She might go for a listed race next before taking on a Group one, the fillies mile in England in the autumn (at Newmarket in September).
