Contrary To Law
He’s a horse that has been given us a bit of trouble at home. He’s keen and we were running him over six furlongs just to try and hold on to him. I thought the step up to seven would suit him today, in a race like this with plenty of pace. Ben said he relaxed well, was a bit green when he went for him first, but he said he finished the race out strongly. He hasn’t been doing that. We’re happy that he has today and he’s on the right track. Hopefully, he can keep improving now. He’s bred to probably stay another furlong, but I’d say seven is a good trip at the moment.

Floresta
That was very good. I don’t know what happened her the last time (10th, Gowran Park), I really fancied her,. I thought she was in for a big year, you can see the size of her there. From three to four she did really well, she came back in great form. I couldn’t explain it, so I just gave her a bit of time. She was starting to come in the last couple of weeks. Her last piece of work wasn’t spectacular, but Ben rode her the day after and he said she had really bounced out of the work well. I think she is a good stayer. She’s won a Group 3 now so we’ll probably step her up. She ran very well in a Group 2 at Doncaster last year (Park Hill Stakes) and I kind of had that on my mind again this year. We’ll see how she is. She has the chance of being a real good one.

Vanir
I really fancied her coming today and thought she would appreciate stepping up to a mile-and-a-half,. She’s not easy on herself, she’s a hardy one. Will Hayes, in all fairness, does a good job with her in the stalls. She wears a blanket. She’s excitable and full of energy. Ben says a mile-and-a-half is no problem but we might drop her back to ten the next time. They went slow and she jumped well and was keen. He didn’t want to be there. She’s a big strong girl and she should develop into a nice filly. Hopefully next year will be another year for her as well.

Ben has been adamant to drop her back to six as she shows so much pace, I thought seven furlongs was a good trip for her,. She has pace and she’s getting faster with a bit of racing. Sometimes with these fillies when they get their head in front once it makes all the difference. She had five seconds so we were scratching our heads but she’s on a bit of a roll now. She’s a fine big filly and hopefully she can keep improving.

It was the perfect race. She had a lovely run the first day,. We did think, coming here today, that a mile and a-half around here with a little ease in the ground would suit her really well. Ben said he kept it simple and she won well. She was still a bit green, so hopefully there is more to come. She’ll probably be in a handicap next, today was important - to get that bracket beside her and everyone is happy.

Things are going well, we’ve had a great couple of days, and it’s always great to have a winner here on Derby Day at the Curragh. Fair play to Ben and the horse. He’s very consistent, he had a few little niggly problems but thankfully he came back. His last run was good. I’m glad Ben got a winner. He was looking at all the other guys having a winner in the yard so it’s great he got one today. I was feeling a bit pumped, it’s more relief than anything else because you know how hard it is to get here and how hard it is to get the horses here. Then everything has to go well in the race. It wasn’t the plan to make the running today but that’s what good jockeys do, take the initiative and ride them what way they think is best. That’s what Ben did today.

Fixation
that’s two derbies in two days, but it's only I don't have a runner in the one tomorrow!. Fixation is a grand little horse and has really improved. I thought he was a little bit unlucky last time in a better race and Shane (Reville, part owner) rang me a couple of weeks ago and said 'I think we should go for the Ladies Derby'. Shane is a good friend, this is his first horse with me and when I was riding, he helped me with the form. He is pretty sharp, so fair dues to him. Himself and the lads bought this horse, sent him to me and it's great to have a winner for them here on Irish Derby weekend. The horses are running really well. They are hitting the board and that's all you can do. You come, you think they are going to run well and as long as they can perform to the best of their ability, that's our job. I've got a great team around me.
