Review CORK 5TH MAY

Miss Sally made a successful return to action when holding off the challenge of Senor Benny to take the featured six furlongs Cork Stakes.

The Michael Halford-trained filly, a five-time winner last year including two Group 3 races, was sent off the 9/2 favourite in this Listed event.

John Murtagh, partnering his ninth winner of the season, forced her through between horses over a furlong out and she kept on under pressure to beat the staying on Senor Benny by 1/2L as the pair went clear.

'She had a little setback two weeks ago and I thought she'd improve from this. She's strengthened up and retains her enthusiasm, and will now go for the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh,' said Halford.

Declan McDonogh and Kevin Prendergast maintained their blistering start to the Flat season when Menwaal coped well with a drip back in trip to land the valuable ten furlongs handicap.

Ovation had the field well stretched early in the straight but Menwaal quickened up impressively inside the final furlong for McDonogh, recording his 13th success of the campaign, to beat Dream Catch by 3L.

McDonogh is two ahead of Pat Smullen who was also on the mark as Tropical Chic made a winning debut in the ten furlongs fillies maiden.

The Moyglare Stud home-bred was an easy to back 10/1 chance (paid 18.90 on the Tote), and needed a strong drive from Smullen to hold the strong renewed effort of fellow newcomer Happy Reunion.

Mist And Stone was prominent throughout to land the six furlongs maiden under Tadgh O'Shea, with Nans Lady a shade unlucky in third, but the race was notable for an incident over 1/4m out.

Willie Supple's mount Gandolfini crashed through the rail and, while horse and jockey appeared unscathed, the flying plastic tubing impeded a number of horses.

O'Shea was given a one day suspension after the stewards decided he'd ridden carelessly inside the final furlong in an incident involving Nans Lady.

'She's always showed plenty of speed at home, and her last two runs showed us that this is her trip,' said trainer Ger Lyons of the Xaar filly, who had been running over a mile plus.

Desperado Queen, one of three horses in training with Bill Doran in Ardee, was the star turn in the jumping section of the card when making virtually all in the two and a half miles mares chase.

Barry Geraghty's mount jumped well throughout but the former champion had to get serious on the run-in to hold off the late challenge of Greenhall Rambler by 3/4L.

'We will leave her out to grass now, and hopefully try to get her some black type later in the year,' said owner/trainer Doran.

Billy Bonnie was a shade fortunate winner in a typically incident-packed beginners chase, with a fine jump at the last taking Niall Madden's mount to the front.

Dego Dante relinquished the lead when blundered badly at this point and in the process hampered odds-on favourite Some Timbering.

Sirius Storm showed a smart turn of foot after the second last under John Cullen for a comfortable victory in the 2m4f conditions hurdle.
