All the horses have been running well, and this is another hardy little horse. He was having awful trouble with sore shins, but we have sorted that out now. I just feel sorry for Rory Cleary who is suspended (rode the winner on his last start). Colin gave him a great ride. We were thinking of giving him a break, but Rory said that he was still in good form and to keep going. He is an easy horse to keep fit, he is very clean winded. The Stewards interviewed Ms Nicola McCarthy, authorised representative of Mr John Joseph Murphy, trainer of Smile Sweetly, concerning the request that their rider, J.M. Conneely carry 3lb overweight in this race. Evidence was heard from the rider and authorised representative concerned. J.M. Conneely stated he'd have no problem riding at the correct weight but his minimum riding weight is 8 stone 3 lbs, while Ms McCarthy stated this rider knows the horse well from riding her out at home and they wanted to claim off her and so they were anxious that he could ride her as there wasn't anyone else available who knew the filly, could claim off her and could do the weight. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards allowed the request, noting the rider had already flagged that he may be 2lbs overweight, but referred the matter on to the Chief Executive of the Turf Club for further investigation. The Stewards interviewed J.M. Conneely, rider of Smile Sweetly, unplaced, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, in the presence of Ms Nicola McCarthy, authorised representative of John Joseph Murphy, trainer and master of J.M. Conneely. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion J.M. Conneely was in breach of Regulation 10 3 (g) in that he used his whip with his arm above shoulder height and Regulation 10 3 (b) in that he continued to use his whip when his chance of being placed had clearly gone, and having taken his good record and his inexperience into account, they suspended him for 1 raceday.
