He's a tough little horse and winning this race with him last year was the first time I was so impressed with him. However that evening, I thought he broke his pelvis being left out in the field and I was so long getting him back and when he did come back, he wasn't jumping as good as the way he could. I was disgusted with the way he jumped at Ballinrobe - he was like a horse going out for a beginners chase for the first time. It was duck-or-no-dinner with him the other morning when I rode him at five furlong pace over fences and he schooled really well. My horses were out of form but they're back now and he'll go back and try to win the Galway Blazers again (won it in 2014).
S J Mahon
That's the first time I rode now with Stephen. He was confident he would get the trip. He fancied him a lot. He battled. He likes quick ground. That was perfect for him there. I got a bit tight to it (the last) but when the horse came to him he stuck his head down and he battled. The last night I wanted to get a run into him and the ground turned overnight. Paul Carberry gave him a peach of a ride and didn't abuse him. If he didn't have that run he probably wouldn't have been winning tonight. I didn't really want to run on the ground but he was in so I decided not to pull him out. He's won twice around Galway. That'll be the plan and we'll see what the handicapper does with him. Somebody said to me the other day that I'd be trying to get him dropped a few pounds but I said I was trying to get him up for a change!
S J Mahon
It was the biggest decision I've ever had with a horse . whether to run again or not. If he hadn't won today they'd all be asking why did I pull him out again. He had a swim this morning to loosen him out. I said after he won over hurdles in Bellewstown that he could be a Galway Plate horse some day and hopefully that's what he'll be. There was a lot of carnage in the race and I hope all the horses and jockeys are okay.
S J Mahon
I'm delighted for Pakie who is like my principal owner Tom Quinn . very loyal . a solid Galway man who leaves me alone to get on with things.
S J Mahon
I think he could be a Galway Plate horse for next year. I decided to go to Ballinrobe the last day to give him a hurdle run. I thought he would have put up a much better show, but they watered the hell out of the ground and it was dead. If it wasn't for Bellewstown I probably wouldn't be involved in racing as I was brought up near here. My first memory was coming here when five with my father. The owner breeder Pa Kelly is from Galway and is 76 and is still training greyhounds.
S J Mahon
The only reason I ran him here is because he was balloted out of the next. He had good bumper form last year and he won here in August but his form fell apart a bit after that and he had a touch of ringworm after his last run.
S J Mahon
He is way better on good ground. When we declared him yesterday we were expecting good to yielding ground and but for his run at Clonmel on soft (fifth behind Reafadda) I would have pulled him out. He has run in two point-to-points but I'm going to be concentrating more on bumpers with him. He is a tricky ride and I told Aine to play him as late as you can. She gave him a lovely ride and to be fair he was off the bridle turning in.
S J Mahon
