The Tony Martin trained Thomas Edison sprang a 12/1 surprise under Kevin Power in the bumper at Leopardstown this afternoon overturning the 4/5 favourite Champagne Fever. Mon 26th Dec
He ran a good race for his first run back which he always does. I'll probably look for a similar type race for him next over 2m4f. I think the John Durkan might come too soon and I might also look for something easier than that. We'll see how he comes out of this but he might go for something Grade 2 or 3. He was keen and that's why I might drop him back in trip. I thought 2m6f on today's ground is as much as he wants. We have got him to stay in the past but I'm not sure it agrees with him and he might be better off on a shorter trip. I don't know if I can see him being competitive at Grade 1 level again but we'll see. I'm hoping he could be like Ballycasey and be rejuvenated.
W P Mullins
That's a nice confidence builder. It's a nice prize to win at our local track and from our local company. It's a very good prize on our doorstep. That ground is not really suitable, it's quite tacky but he did what he was supposed to do. He jumped brilliantly and just fiddled the last but that was just Paul being careful as he had the race won. I said to Paul beforehand don't make it if you can. I'm just happy to be going to Cheltenham on a positive note, and I'd imagine he will either run in the Ryanair or the Queen Mother.
W P Mullins
I was delighted with what he did considering how hard he pulled for the first half of the race. I didn't think he could pull like that and beat a field of horses like that. Last week he wasn't coming here but we stuck him in and his last piece of work he sparked so we said we'd run him as he was getting the weight allowance. We are looking at the Durkan but I'd say Boston Bob is probably going to run there. Maybe he's better running a little fresher, so perhaps no run between now and the King George would be better for him.
W P Mullins
Ruby said he jumped from fence to fence at Leopardstown after racing last Sunday and I was very pleased with him. His style of jumping is the reason we are going for the Arkle at Cheltenham and his mistake at Leopardstown on his last run was not like him.
W P Mullins
He's an electric jumper. I'd say it was just lack of concentration at the second last. He's able to put in short ones as well as long ones and he looks a natural. He'll have no trouble going out or back in trip and I have him entered in everything. He'll probably go shorter at Christmas and whether he runs between now and then will depend on how he comes out of this,.
W P Mullins
it's a huge relief to get this fellow back on track - we're always afraid when a horse gets an infection like that which might ruin his season. At least he seems to have come back to where he was though. It wouldn't be a problem going out in trip with him but we'll stick to the Supreme Novices Hurdle.
W P Mullins
It's nice to get that out of the way. The late start was a bit nerve-wracking. He jumped very big, but that's to be expected as he has been point-to-pointing.He has a very high cruising speed and that was a very pleasing effort.
W P Mullins
that was an extraordinary performance - he is a super horse. I don't know what we'll do next year; we were thinking of going straight over fences like we did with Florida Pearl but I'm not sure now. I thought he was out on his feet in the straight but Patrick said he was just idling. We know that the third (Mozoltov) is a good horse but Champagne Fever obviously stays well and is a good jumper. He is one that we are really looking forward to and has huge ability.
W P Mullins
Champagne Fever learned an awful lot from his run at Leopardstown over Christmas. He ran very green then and today's soft ground was also a big help. He is by Stowaway and they go on soft ground. The plan was to go jumping but the way he won we'll reflect on that now.
W P Mullins
