Review bellewstown 17th Aug
Forces Of Darkness produced a devastating late burst to spring a 25-1 surprise in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Auction Maiden at BellewstownWed 17th Aug
He doesn’t relish that ground any longer but Chris was brave and said he’d ride him up there as nothing was going to come from behind here today on that ground. He went through it thank God but he’s a good actioned horse. He’s tough and he’s genuine. That’s his 16th win and I’d like to get to 20! He’s back up there close to the level when he won the Minstrel last year, and that’s a race he’s likely to go for again. It’s a privilege to have him and his owners. He’s a very special horse. He’ll be up in the invitation area now for races abroad again but he’s a horse that has always needed a lot of attention to keep him right. My head man Paddy O’Brien who led him up today takes care of him all the time. He gets a mile well so seeing the trip out today was going to be no problem to him but it’s nice to win over six furlongs as well.
T Hogan
I thought if he was right he was well capable of beating those. I didn't think there was a Group 1 horse in against him, and on his day he's still a Group 1 horse. In his work he showed that he was as good as ever. He's had life long problems with allergies, and in the spring we thought we were losing the battle. He'll probably come back for a Group 3 here in August, and he'll go back to Haydock. If we get invites, he may go on his travels again!
T Hogan
That is a bit of a relief because he has always been a very hard horse to train at this time of year as he suffers from allergies related to pollens. I was very disappointing at Leopardstown the last day but he showed up with an allergy type of mucus. Physically he is as well as ever and hopefully things will improve for the rest of the year. I always knew he was genuine and is a very intelligent horse. He'll run in the Minstrel Stakes next and hopefully he can get back up to where he was but how far he can go I don't know.
T Hogan
It is good to firm ground but it is very kind ground, it's very nice ground. I suppose he is getting older and a little bit more ease in the ground is always a plus to him. He's a great horse to me and a great horse to Tom. We went very quick and just for about half a furlong I was caught a bit flat-footed but he stayed on and did his best work towards the finish. He won well. Hopefully back to Hong Kong in December will be the plan. It's nice to win at the Curragh as he does a lot of his work here but it is the first time he has won at the Curragh. Every time he came here before something went wrong. I wasn't worried about the ground. Firm ground doesn't bother him, it's only dead, sticky ground that he can't handle. I was afraid they would not go much of a pace but they did and he quickened away nicely. He may come back here for the Minstrel Stakes. We'll give the July Cup a miss and he can go on his travels then. He ran too fresh at Ascot, he hit the gate and ran with the choke out and it was a great run in hindsight. He needs a run every three weeks or else he gets too fresh like at Ascot. He could go to France for the Prix Maurice de Gheest and he'll go to Haydock for the Sprint Cup for sure.
T Hogan
I'm delighted he won. He ground it out. His best form has been on fast ground. Maybe that's not as good as the form he showed in France, but I'm happy with him. He's best on fast ground. The ground has gone a bit there. It's a nice race to win. The Desmond is one of the old traditional races. Johnny gave him a good ride. It's nice to get his head in front again. He has lots of options. He will stay a mile, he's proved that there. He might go back for the Hong Kong Mile and the Breeders Cup is an option. He's in the Haydock Sprint and he could go for the Park Stakes. He'll be entered in the [Prix de la] Foret.
T Hogan
He needed an outing like that as he's got lazier. Wayne had to give him a slap but that will bring him on for Dubai. This year it would have been hard to go to Dubai without a run first. He'll go for the Golden Shaheen now, a six furlong race on the tapeta.
T Hogan
He's not in love with the ground but he has a bit of class,. He's a lot stronger as a four-year-old. There aren't many opportunities for him here now and we'll try and find another handicap for him.
T Hogan
Gordon Lord Byron just can't handle soft ground. At Listowel the last day, he hated the ground, but he still wasn't beaten that far. He should make up into a nice sprinter next year and I'm delighted for his owners, the Cahalans, as they bought him as a foal but he then failed to sell as a yearling. They've had a lot of patience and it has paid off. There's a six furlong handicap in a few weeks time that we'll come back for.
T Hogan
