Well backed King quickens up to win in style
The King quickened up in impressive fashion to take the colts and geldings maiden at Gowran Park for Jessica Harrington. Sat 16th Sep
that was a good performance in a very good Group 3. I thought he did it very well — settled nicely and quickened up well. He’s a Group winner over seven and he’d probably be even better going a mile. Hopefully he’ll have a long season ahead of him. He’s after winning his Group race already so I’m not in a rush with his next start. He’s a horse that will travel to England or France, and obviously Group 2 and Group 1 is where we have to go next. That was lovely ground there today, and as long as the ground is not firm he’s perfect. He’s matured a lot from three to four, and he’ll handle faster ground better than he would have last year. He’s a solid colt.

he's a very consistent stakes horse and he'll head on for a Group race now. The Gladness is a possibility for him, providing it doesn't come too soon. It's a long year ahead please God. Every drop of rain helped him as he's a big horse and he likes a good dig. He can step all the way up into a Group horse without any problems.

What impressed me was the way he quickened through the gap when it eventually came. For a few strides it looked like he was going to be an unlucky loser. I thought it was a very good performance on ground that we think might be faster than ideal for him. I had toyed with the idea of going to the French Guineas but obviously we will wait and go to the Curragh (for the Guineas) which is the logical progression for him. I think it was a good competitive renewal of the Tetrarch and he's an improving colt. When he won his maiden last year by nine and a half lengths I said that he'd make into a Group horse and he is. A mile or a mile and a quarter should suit him well.

The ground is probably more testing than he'd appreciate and when he won in Limerick I said I'd run him in a 2,000 Guineas Trial (at Leopardstown) and nothing has changed and he'll run there next,. I appreciate that is over seven furlongs but that doesn't worry me as my only worry today was getting the mile and 100 yards. He's a big gross, great looking horse and I just wanted to get a run into him because all mine are three weeks behind and my earlier runners got tired. Declan was under strict instructions to take his time. Declan was an apprentice with me years ago and the last time he rode for me was when he won the Concorde Stakes (with Anam Allta in 2011) at Tipperary on Arc weekend. I have retained no rider for the year and Leigh Roche was in Dubai today (on unplaced Hit The Bid) and Chris Hayes rode very well for me at Naas and I've no retained rider and will use a variety of jockeys. I've been spoiled for 34 years that I've had Mick Kinane and Pat Smullen and it is hard to believe they covered that length of time (as stable jockeys). They are two brilliant men and at the moment the logical thing to do is not to retain anybody.

He is a very nice colt and I don't think I'll run him again and will have a word with Lord Grimthorpe but I'd say that's it for the year. I think the next time you'll see him is in a 2,000 Guineas Trial and he's a horse we like an awful lot and think he'll be a Group horse next year. He has progressed very well from his first run and Pat (Smullen) said he had stacks more left today. He's a good ground horse but I wanted to get a second run into him because I want to put him away for next year. He's potentially a high-class colt - he is bred to be it, looks it and is a lovely-mannered horse.
