Sandymount springs 40/1 surprise
Kate Harrington saw her claim reduced to five as she guided Sandymount Duke to a surprise 40/1 success in the bumper at Listowel, the McElligotts Tralee Ltd. INH Flat Race. Wed 17th Sep
I thought a mile and seven (furlongs) might be a bit short for him, and the only way to ride him is to bowl along. I think he got such a fright coming out of the stalls that it took a little while to get in front but she said he was super all the way. He loves that ground and bounces off it. It's the Galway Plate now and we'll see what happens. He won't mind if the ground is a bit slower. He's won ten races now. A Flat race, bumper, hurdles and chases. He's become a part of the furniture. I think Ronnie (Wood, owner) is going to come to Galway. I was talking to him there (by phone) and he's thrilled.
Mrs John Harrington
.He needs a big galloping track, three miles and top of the ground. He's a great fun horse,. The Galway Plate is a possibility but Ruby said he wouldn't have the speed to get to the first fence quick enough. There is the Summer Plate at Market Rasen or we might have to think about Cheltenham in October. It's hard to find something suitable for him.
Mrs John Harrington
I didn't want to get him a fall the first day over fences and could be much more positive today and he jumped super. When you want him (to jump), he's there and if you let him be careful he is, and the further he goes the better he'll be.
Mrs John Harrington
He's an unbelievable horse to win four in a row,.
Mrs John Harrington
That step up to three miles was great. He's more grown up each time he runs. Robbie was funny about him, he wanted to take a lead but he jumped so well he decided to go on. He jumped great and he'll go for another novice between two and a half and three miles. (Owner) Ronnie Wood is somewhere in America.
Mrs John Harrington
I'm delighted with him. He just lobs away in front and when the others came to him he quickened up,. He'll head on now for a novice hurdle over two-and-a-half and we could look at Galway. He jumps great and does everything right. We'll wait to next year to go chasing. He's big enough to jump a fence. It was Ronnie's birthday last Monday - he was 68. He's in Minneapolis at the moment on tour.
Mrs John Harrington
I'm the most surprised person in Listowel. He showed me absolutely nothing in two hurdle races, I just can't believe it and Kate gave him a super ride. She has lost her seven pound claim now and is down to five. He is a full-brother to Sandymount Earl who won the Cesarewitch. He doesn't like jumping so maybe we will keep him to the flat.
Mrs John Harrington
