Permission was given for Grandlad (IRE) to be mounted in the chute and to go early to post.
Approaching the 4 furlong marker, Hiya Maite (GB), placed second, lugged slightly right-handed away from the winner, Grandlad (IRE), carrying Topwarrior (GB), which was later pulled up, slightly off its intended line causing it to subsequently make contact with Pop Star (IRE), placed third, which resulted in Topwarrior (GB) being buffeted around for a number of strides, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Hiya Maite (GB).
Following the race, P J McDonald reported that Topwarrior (GB), which was pulled up, lost its action approximately 2½ furlongs out; the Veterinary Officer examined the gelding post-race and had nothing to report, other than evidence of a small cut on its left-hind pastern.
