FormscanBy Michael Graham - VERCINGETORIX looked a horse of considerable promise when he romped home in a maiden hurdle at Limerick over Christmas. He was very highly tried on his next two outings when sixth in the Grade One Spring Hurdle at Leopardstown and then last of three in a Grade Two at Fairyhouse when odds on. He was beaten a long way in those two contests and was eased at Fairyhouse two flights from home. Davy Condon reported afterwards that his mount never travelled. Those runs were almost too bad to be true so he is given another chance to show his ability in this considerably lesser grade. His stablemate Hostile Fire looks the danger. The 125-rated gelding was runner-up in two maiden hurdles and then got his head in front at Fairyhouse. His next appearances saw him finish down the field in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham and the Grade One Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree. He won on the flat on good ground and should give the selection plenty to do. Based on his third place at Kilbeggan, Esta Quercus has place prospects.
