The front-running Stromstrad soon had them well strung out here. He looked to be coming under pressure when crashing out four from home and leaving eventual winner Western Whisky in front.

Dot Love's charge was the only one to lie up with the leader. He made a mistake himself there and was slightly hampered by the faller.

Being left in the lead didn't help the winner according to the trainer as "he doesn't want to come too early." He was tackled by Freddie Foster before the third last and looked set for second soon after.

Freddie Foster had settled in behind the leaders and made up good ground after the fourth last.

He took over three out and looked to have it in the bag after going clear before the second last.

Distress signals went out, however, as he started to tie up on the run to the last and he was running on empty on the run-in as Western Whisky, in first time blinkers, battled back to get up.

Ross Accord and Inch Sunset fought it out for a moderate third from the third last in what looked a poor contest.
