Estate provides Slevin with first win
Trainer Nigel Slevin recorded his first track winner as his Third Estate ran out a surprise 40/1 victor of the Jackson Court Hotel INH 4yo Flat Race. Mon 02nd May
It was a bit of a surprise. She had been disappointing so far this season but she takes a good few runs to get fit. Ruth rode the race to perfection. She kept out of the chopped-up ground as the other two took on each other. Fair play to Ruth, she rode a fantastic race. We tried the cheekpieces on her the last time and they seemed to have improved her and this was her second time to wear them. It's great to win with her on the Flat as she ran out of options over hurdles and fences. She was badly handicapped, she was just caught. She had her first run on the Flat at the Curragh but she didn't like the stalls, so the flag start here was ideal for her, this race was really ideal for her. She loves Tramore and was placed the other two times she ran here. It wasn't a total surprise as the track suited and the ground dried up a bit. We definitely won't go over fences with her again. I wouldn't risk her as she is the only filly I have out of Solerina. She is entered on Saturday in a maiden but is not eligible now. I'd like to see what the handicapper gives her and maybe go for something at the end of the season on the Flat. Her mother won three Flat races so it's great that she has now as well. She has now won over fences, hurdles and on the level. Solerina is twenty-two now and is in-foal to Walk In The Park. I think she has nine foals so far and she is great form.
Michael J Bowe
she jumped really well out in front and gave an exhibition of jumping and the experience really stood to her. She was given 14lbs for winning at Kilbeggan last year and it put her out of hurdles; I had never any intention of going chasing with her but from the first day she schooled well over fences and I'm just relieved now that she had that as an option as she is so badly handicapped over hurdles. We'll see what the handicapper does with her now and it's great to win here; her mother won a Grade 1 here and is back in foal at 21 years of age to Vandegarde. She has two Yeats foal, a four year old with Enda Bolger and a three year old with Mags Mullins and has a Getaway colt foal this year. She (Jaime Sommers) is the only filly I have out of Solerina so is very important and is also only six and today was her 38th run today. She is consistent, minds herself and is fierce sound. I'd love to get black-type with her eventually.
Michael J Bowe
We've been trying different tactics with her recently, covering her up, and it's definitely helped her a lot,. Cathal rode a great race. He was last most of the way and she loves passing horses. She's very different to her mother in that respect. It's a great thing when young mares start improving, she's only five, and she's run 24 times. She jumps superbly and I'm delighted with that. It's great for Cathal and great for the pedigree as well. We'll see what the handicapper does now. There is a race in Navan, that used to be called the Albany Hurdle, at the end of the month over 2m6f and she stays well. That's an option for her and there is also a Listed race in Gowran at the end of September. It would be great to get a bit of black-type for her. She handled the ground and handles it better than she did last year. As she's getting older she's handling the ground better. He kept her out wide, which is something he wanted to do, and he got the best of the ground. So long as she settles in races, I think that's a big thing for her. She's the first winner out of Solerina and she's the last filly out of her so she's very important.
Michael J Bowe
“The better ground has made a difference to her,”
