Our Duke off the mark in emphatic fasion
Our Duke absolutely routed his rivals in Punchestown's bumper with a relentless galloping performance. Sat 14th Nov
I'm absolutely delighted; he was good and Robert said he really only started jumping when the gun was to his head over the last three. He loses his concentration but was much sharper today. He only starts concentrating when he goes quick, and you can't go too quick on that ground. He wouldn't have liked that ground as it's horrible ground, and it's a good performance giving Presenting Percy 7lb.
Mrs John Harrington
I can’t believe it, I really can’t. I may look calm but I’m shaking inside! He was up there all the way, he may have made one mistake but he jumped beautifully and Robert rode him with such confidence. He was absolutely convinced that he was going to stay and he rode him like that. He actually loved the ground as I was a bit worried about it drying out. I could see the three of them were going away and he just kept going. At the fourth last the pack seemed to be closing and he just changed gear again. I knew he was so relaxed and Robbie knows him so well. For a horse having just his fourth run in a chase it was a great performance. We all have to get there but he looks a Gold Cup horse. That’s why he didn’t go to Cheltenham this year as we wanted to wait and go to the Gold Cup next year. We’ll keep him and Sizing John apart and see what happens. I haven’t raced him much and he has very few runs under his belt. It’s hard to comprehend winning the Gold Cup and the Irish National. It’s taken me a long time to get the hang of training these staying chasers!. Robbie rode his first ever winner for me. We get on very well. I give out to him if he does something wrong but he doesn’t do much wrong these days.
Mrs John Harrington
I was really pleased with him at Navan and he's been in good form since,.
Mrs John Harrington
It was a lovely performance. He was great, and he looked good last year winning the bumper and hurdle. I don’t know what happened to him in Thurles but he came back and finished third in Fairyhouse. It’s great to get his chasing career underway. I thought that was a very very hot race. He made a mistake at the third last, probably his only mistake, and Robert was amazed how quick he came back on the bridle. We’ll take it from there. Christmas comes a bit quick and we might wait for Naas. He does go on soft ground. The lovely thing is that he has lived up to what we thought he was last year and he is a very big horse. He was fit enough to do himself justice. Funnily enough for a big horse, once you get him fit he’s there.
Mrs John Harrington
He's a full-brother to the horse that won at Clonmel (Oscar Sam). He was really good. I actually didn't think he'd do that. I thought there might be smarter and quicker horses in it than him. He stayed galloping the whole way and it was brilliant.
Mrs John Harrington
