Formscan By Shane Redmond - Although he only won once, BUNTING (1) was consistent enough over hurdles. He was far too good for two rivals when a wide-margin winner on his chasing debut on good ground at Ballinrobe in late August and then ran a big race on very different ground in the valuable Irish Cesarewitch at the Curragh. On his overall form, he's preferred to more recent winners Chanceawetmorning, who only had to jump five fences due to the low sun to win his beginners' chase at Sligo, and Sir Allen who got the better of an odds-on favourite to win on his chasing debut at Gowran Park. The far less exposed Vitorio Piel might well emerge as a threat to them all. He won his bumper at the festival here in 2025 and also showed up well over hurdles on occasion.

Bunting has always promised so much and luckily Paul (Townend) picked him in the Coral Cup last year, which meant I got onto Jimmy Du Seuil! That's the sort of ability he has, and he'd been running some good races, including on the Flat last year. The fences seem to have woken him up. He was very good and even when he made the mistake, he was so quickly away from it. This trip around here is on the sharp side for him, but it's all about finding a rhythm and getting into a flow over the fences, and he was able to do that and put them to the sword.

He was a very good juvenile hurdler who also won a few Flat races, but was going through the motions recently, so we started schooling him over fences, which seemed to ignite him. He'll keep going over fences and will go on softer ground as well. We'll look for a rated novice chase now. It was a nice winning spare for Phily, who rides out for me.

It was a nice performance, hopefully now he’s just coming to himself,. I think he should improve again for a bit of nicer ground as the spring goes on. The final of this series in Punchestown is going to be the big aim for him. We had him qualified already and this race just fitted in nicely. It was a taking performance and it was nice to see him hit the line the way he did. The first day we drew a line through it. We bounced out to make all and he didn’t have the experience under his belt to manage with it, and his jumping was terrible on the day. We’ve ironed that out since. We’ve sat on our hands for as long as we could waiting for nicer ground but it didn’t materialise so we ended up getting him out today and taking a chance.
