Having had a nice pipe opener on the Flat at Gowran Park earlier this month, there should be no worries with regard to fitness. A 103-horse on the Flat, Columbus scored easily on his second start over flights when winning at the Galway Festival last month. Bumper and maiden hurdle winner Beir Bua needs to improve but looks best of the remainder.

We held him up in Killarney as he hadn't any experience over hurdles but, with that experience under his belt, we decided to change tactics and to make the running today. I thought he gave an exhibition of jumping for a horse having only his second run over hurdles. I don't know why he disappointed at Royal Ascot but Colin (Keane) said he just didn't stay, and maybe he was right. The Ebor in York is his next run and we'll see how he gets on there, but I'll be looking at mixing a Flat/jumping campaign. We'll see what happens on the Flat and if he looks good enough, we'll pursue that, but I'd also like to have him for the spring festivals at Cheltenham and Aintree.

We liked him but I'd say he is still a bit immature. He is a stronger horse now though and has improved a bit. We'll enter him for the (Grade 1) four-year-old hurdle at Punchestown as he has beaten a horse rated 121 by ten lengths today, so we hope he is getting to that type of area. We were waiting for nice ground and he jumped well and was more professional today. We'll see how he is after his Punchestown race and he could come back for a late-summer, autumn campaign. On the Flat, he would want further than 1m4f but he'll have to have a break at some stage this summer too.
