Formscan By Gary Carson - LOUGH LEANE has a nice low draw here and may be able to make the breakthrough for Maurice Ahern. The Cityscape gelding won six in England and has been knocking on the door since joining the Mallow handler. It was a solid effort to finish fourth at Gowran Park last time and he remains on the same mark. Merlin The Wizard looks like another with obvious claims after a couple of decent runs. It looked like a more competitive event in which he was fifth at Leopardstown last time and connections claim off him now. Expound is a dual course and distance winner but needs to improve on his recent showing at Limerick.

A lot of things were right for him today although we were lucky we had him entered before he won on the Flat at Ballinrobe. He likes good ground and the tracks which are usually good, or better. He was allowed to dictate, Dan (King) was able to get a 'fill' and used pole position well. I knew the owners the Corner House Syndicate would all be here as they are local in Tallow and they have been getting a great kick out of the horse.

Jack gave him a great ride. I told him to take his time as I knew there would be a good pace with Verhoyen in it,. It set up nicely for him and he just held on. It’s 13 months since he won and the handicapper has been slow to drop him. The horse is getting older and getting slower so he has to come down. I wasn’t really expecting it as I thought his last three runs were disappointing. He surprised me today but he likes it here so you never know. I think there is a race on the last day here but I might just leave him off after this. He probably only has another year in him as he’s turning 10 next year. He’s been a great servant to the yard.

We had no luck with her at the beginning, we did various different things, and then we got Seamie Heffernan to ride her five times and she hit the crossbar a few times,. Seamie would come in and say ‘this one will win a race’. We bought her because Jessica’s father Tony is a friend of mine, and he works for me. We bought her originally because Jessica got her Flat licence but she just wasn’t doing what we’d like so we got Seamie then and in fairness to him he got off her the last time he rode and said this mare will win. Sometimes you don’t believe it, you think this is a jockey telling me a story, but she did turn up for Jessica the last day. He said maybe we should take advantage of the 7lb so we did the last day. Jessica is riding great. I said to her if she could take up the running and slow it down but she said that there were two horses in it that were runaways. She said she’d sit in. She’s still very young and hasn’t a pile of riding done but she was very clever there. She’s very good, she has a lovely feel for horses. I’m surprised she isn’t getting more spins. We only have five horses and they’ve all won. We’ve no serious horses but we do it for ourselves, which is better again.
