Carrickboy (50/1) made virtually all to win the Byrne Gold Plate for Venetia Williams and Liam Treadwell.
The nine-year-old had been pulled up on his last start at Wincanton but he bounced back in style to see off his rivals under a bold front-running ride.
Despite a sizeable field, the Grade 3 contest was one where relatively few got involved. Matuhi and Tartak attempted to slug it out with the winner at various stages of the contest but the pair were cast aside before a bigger threat was to emerge in Vino Griego.
Gary Moore's eight-year-old stayed on from the rear to put himself into contention with two to take though he couldn't force his way past a gallant winner. Tartak ran on again to take third with Hunt Ball finishing an honourable fourth under top weight.
Ballynagour (7-2) travelled well before weakening in the closing stages.
There was drama ahead of the race as the Tony McCoy ridden Cantlow was withdrawn at the start by the racecourse vet. The eight-year-old had reportedly bled from the nose in the paddock and was not allowed to take part.
