- 1.20: JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1) Race conditions: £150,000 | 2m1f | 8 hurdles | New Course
LULAMBA 2/1 (NAP)
Nicky Henderson has made no secret of the regard in which he holds this ex-french performer, and he showed exactly why when making a deeply impressive winning UK debut at Ascot in January. He looks head and shoulders above the UK opposition, and remains open to plenty more improvement after just two career starts so far (winner in Auteuil in October).
2.00: BetMGM County handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) Race conditions: £98,370 (2024) | 2m1f| 8 hurdles | New CourseVALGRAND 14/1 (VALUE ANGLE)
Dan Skelton’s smooth-traveller has won 3 of his 6 career starts over hurdles so far, and starts off into handicaps from a potentially lenient opening mark on the pick of his efforts in graded company (notably when second behind Potters Charm here in November). He is reportedly working very well at home, will appreciate the better spring ground, and his latest Kempton effort over Christmas can be safely ignored (easy to back and soon in a poor position).
2.40: Paddy Power Mares’ Chase (Grade 2) Race conditions: £120,000 | 2m. 4f. 127yds.| 17 fences | New CourseALLEGORIE DE VASSY 5/1
Willie Mullins classy mare has won 5 of her 13 career starts over fences so far, and comes into the festival on the back of a cracking effort from the front at Naas in February (just denied on the nod by Dinoblue). She got a poor ride from off the pace when only fourth behind Limerick Lace in the 2024 renewal of this race, and much more positive tactics on better ground should see her go very close.
3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) Race conditions: £150,000 | 3m | 12 hurdles | New courseTHE BIG WESTERNER 6/1
Henry de Bromhead has a typically strong hand in this punting minefield, and his Limerick winner seems sure to relish a step up to three miles in this stamina sapping Grade 1 contest (pointing background and looked a relentless galloper on Rules debut). He is now unbeaten after three career starts, and should go well if inexperience in this big field is not a negative.
4.00: Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup (Grade 1) Race conditions: £625,000 | 3m. 2f. 70yds.| 22 fences | New CourseGALOPIN DES CHAMPS 4/9
Willie Mullins top class chaser impressed again when landing the odds at the Dublin Racing festival in February, and a positive ride here from Paul Townend can see him retain his title and cement his place in racing folklore. He has scared off most of the viable opposition now, with stablemate Fact to File going for the Ryanair earlier in the week, and is likely to start one of the shortest priced favourites of the week.
4.40: St James’s Place Hunter Chase (Listed) Race conditions: £50 | 3m. 2f. 70yds. | 17 fences | New CourseANGELS DAWN 4/1
Sam Curling’s prolific mare looked to be travelling very strongly when falling two out in the 2024 renewal of this prize, and seems sure to go very close if she can put in a clean round. She will appreciate some better ground, and her gallant win in the 2023 Kim Muir remains fresh in the memory.
5.20: Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race conditions: £75,000 | 2m. 4f. 56yds. | 10 hurdles | New CourseTAPONTHEGO 14/1
The curtain closer of the 2025 Festival sets a stern challenge for punters, but Henry de Bromhead’s novice has impressed in five runs over hurdles so far and could improve further for a strongly run handicap (should help him settle a lot better in the early stages). He was a real eye-catcher at Punchestown in February under a quiet ride behind the impressive William Munny, and this opening mark could well be on the lenient side against more exposed rivals.

Vincent Finegan's Tip 2025
- The Big Westerner 3.20pm Cheltenham, Friday
This Henry De Bromhead-trained mare looks well above average and won't be out of place in this Grade One contest. Unbeaten in a point-to-point and two hurdle races, she jumps well and will relish the stamina test of this staying Novices Hurdle. She is a half-sister to Stay Away Fay who won this same race at the 2023 Festival.
