McCoy denies Denman link

As Denman's Gold Cup prep looms, either in the "Hennessy" at Leopardstown or Newbury's Aon Chase, Tony McCoy has quashed speculation he has been offered the ride at Cheltenham in March.

Paul Nicholls' ten-year-old put up a tremendous weight-carrying performance to claim a second Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury in November, and would be seeking to become only the second horse to regain the Gold Cup.

The first to reclaim the blue riband was stablemate Kauto Star when he beat Denman 12 months ago, and the pair are all set for a titanic third clash at the Festival.

With Ruby Walsh likely to stick with Kauto Star, a new rider will be needed for his big rival unless connections once again call on Sam Thomas or Christian Williams.

Asked if he had been offered the ride in the Gold Cup, McCoy, speaking on At The Races, said: "Certainly not. I'm sure whoever does get the ride will be very lucky. I'd certainly gladly appreciate it if it did happen.

"His performance in the Hennessy was second to none. If they (Denman and Kauto Star) both get there it will make for a great race."
