How to Understand Cheltenham Betting Odds

You have made your selection for a race at the Cheltenham Festival and you are ready to place your bet. Understanding Cheltenham betting odds is relatively straightforward but here is a quick overview.

Cheltenham Festival odds are a guide to a horse’s chances of winning a race and odds are displayed in two ways - fractions and decimals:

  • Fractions: if your winning horse is priced at 4/1 and you place a €1/£1 bet, you will receive €4/£4 back plus your initial €1/£1 stake. Your total return is €5/£5.
  • Decimals: the same odds of 4/1 are displayed as 5.0. This is 4 divided by 1 plus your €1/£1 stake. As above, your total return is €5/£5.

When is The Best Time to Bet on Cheltenham?

The biggest concern that customers will have when it comes to the Cheltenham Festival betting odds is when they should make their wager. The leading sportsbooks offer Cheltenham betting odds 12 months before the first race of the Festival, the Supreme Novices‘ Hurdle, gets underway.

But, what important factors should players take into consideration before making a bet on some of the biggest races of the week?

What to Consider Before Betting on Cheltenham 2026

Champion Hurdle

The Champion Hurdle is the feature race on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival.

A Champion Hurdle that poses the question of “what if?”

What if Lossiemouth runs?

What if The New Lion shows he is a real two-miler?

What if Golden Ace can defy the odds and go back-to-back?

And the all-important one: what if Constitution Hill turns up after three falls in four races?

This could be the most open Champion Hurdle we may have ever seen, with the possibilities being endless and the result unpredictable. This is how the current Champion Hurdle odds are weighing up between everyone.

Brighterdaysahead and The New Lion currently lock horns at the top of the market, but with Gordon Elliott’s mare there are still question marks about her chances of winning at the Festival. The New Lion was successful in his trial at Cheltenham, but with the injury to Sir Gino during the race it is hard to know how deep the form is and how much we are able to take from the performance.

The Lossiemouth scenario rolls on again, and we see the rumour mill in full swing over whether she will take her chance in the two-mile event or the Mares’ Hurdle again. Golden Ace lines up again and the Champion Hurdle winner of last year, and this year’s Fighting Fifth winner, will look to defy the odds and opinions again.

It’s a Champion Hurdle like no other, and it looks likely that for the first time since 2022 we will not have a favourite going off at odds-on.

Queen Mother Champion Chase

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is the feature race on the second day of the Festival. This race will bring together the leading two-milers in training.

A prestigious race in the horse racing calendar, and one that has seen plenty of shocks through the years. Short-odds favourites tend not to do so well in these races, with the likes of Douvan, Defi Du Seuil, and El Fabiolo all having been defeated at ridiculously short odds, and this year looks another fascinating renewal.

Majborough will fly the colours of owner JP McManus, who still has not won the Champion Chase as an owner at the Festival. The talented horse showed the full effect of cheekpieces working, with a flawless jumping display and the stamina allowing him to take off in breathtaking fashion.

He will have to beat the defending champion Marine Nationale, who comes alive when entering the Cheltenham Festival. He is two from two there, and with ground conditions likely to favour Barry Connell’s star, he will have a leading chance at landing a Festival hat-trick.

Rivals include L’Eau du Sud, who has been freshened up for the race, and Il Etait Temps, who has gone from 5/2 favourite all the way to 7/1 for the event off the back of his Ascot run. Being trained by Willie Mullins means this horse will be right in contention and looks a massive danger.

Stayers' Hurdle

The Stayers' Hurdle is the feature race on the third day of the Festival. Battle-hardened hurdlers head into battle over three miles in an attempt to bring home the most prestigious crown on Day 4.

An intriguing renewal of the Stayers’ Hurdle this year includes the rematch between Teahupoo and Bob Olinger, both owned by Robcour, who will have no complaints if it becomes another match race up the straight. It looks like it will be one of the better renewals seen in recent years.

Ma Shantou, Impose Toi, Kabral Du Mathan all have live chances, and another Irish raider comes in the form of the Gordon Elliott-trained Honesty Policy.

Teahupoo is short to claim his second win in the race, with Bob Olinger and Honesty Policy behind in the betting. There is no obvious pace angle in the race as of yet. This could play to the disadvantage of Teahupoo, as he is seen at his best when stamina comes to the fore in a strongly run race.

Gold Cup

Friday at the Cheltenham Festival is all about the feature race of the meeting, when racing enthusiasts are searching for value among the Cheltenham Gold Cup 2026 odds.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup looks an extremely fascinating race this year with the likes of Jango Baie, Galopin Des Champs, Fact To File, who will need to be supplemented, Gaelic Warrior, The Jukebox Man and Spillane’s Tower also are in this tremendous field.

It looks like it will be an outstanding race. Last year’s winner, Inowthewayurthinkin, has disappointed since, and the performance of The Jukebox Man in the King George was extremely impressive. It looks like it is going to be a vintage renewal of the race, and you can also add in last year’s Irish Grand National winner, Haiti Couleurs, who will ensure that a stamina test is made in the race.
