Big and raw Eiri now a winner
As the youngest horse in the line-up at six, and starting off in handicaps with cheek-pieces deployed, the potential was there for Eiri Na Casca to manage better from a mark of just 74 in the Tramore Supporters Club Handicap Chase. The Spadoun gelding was clipped in from 33/1 to 25s and he got the job done in the hands of Sean Flanagan. Thu 08th Oct
He wasn't right down at the start at Galway (October 29) and was withdrawn but it might have been all for luck as the ground was a bit slow too. He got kicked in the paddock in the morning of the race and didn't feel right going to the start and to be fair the vets used their heads and didn't allow him to race. He loved the ground here, they went a right gallop and the race fell apart so he was able to move into it without even asking him. The last day here in a hurdle race, I was last and got to the front turning in but he didn't do a tap when he got there. He even looked at some of Molony's (racecourse owners) horses in the field galloping beside him and was gawking out looking at them, so I didn't want to be in front too soon today.
Denis Gerard Hogan
That was very similar to my earlier winner: we went hard early, he was slow over the first couple but I was happy enough they were going too hard and on the second circuit they slowed right up,. His last four jumps were class - big, bold, scopey jumps and was good and game. . He'll probably run in the Galway Blazers now. I could never figure out why he couldn't win a hurdle race off 90 but he must be an out and out chaser. I won't give up on it though - I might ride him differently and hang on to him over three miles next time.

I thought it was déjà vu from Killarney with Misdflight (carried out at the third last Thursday). It opened up for me off the turn (before two out) and they saw me late enough and tried to close the door. I had plenty of horse and was gone through, and jumped the last before going away to win nicely. I wasn’t sure about the trip (2m7f) and thought whatever chance I have of winning was to drop in. They went a good gallop and he worked his way into it. I’m delighted for Adrian (McNamara, owner) who is a great supporter of mine.
Denis Gerard Hogan
I wasn't worried about the drop in trip as he hadn't got home over 2m6f in Galway. In Musselburgh over 2m7f I dropped him in and he probably got the trip but just ran into one.
