Barry Connell's 'Mickey Mouse' comments on the Clarence House Chase

Holly Harte
The team discuss Barry Connell and his outspoken nature
Barry Connell is a trainer and owner who has become one of the most talked-about figures in National Hunt racing in recent seasons, both for his results and his forthright views.
Based in County Kildare, he is best known for training Marine Nationale, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner at the Cheltenham Festival, a success that propelled Connell into the top tier of Irish trainers.
A former amateur jockey and a successful businessman, Connell took a hands-on approach to racing after years of frustration as an owner, eventually deciding to train his own horses and “do it his own way.”
His training operation is relatively small but tightly run, relying on experienced staff and a selective approach rather than volume.
Connell is also notable for his outspoken confidence and media presence - unafraid to talk up his horses or criticise races and rivals - which has divided opinion but undeniably added colour and debate to the sport.
Increasingly, his bullish assessments have been backed up by results, earning him respect as a serious trainer with championship-level horses.
Oozing confidence in his star horse
Speaking on irishracing.com’s Irish Angle, Emma Nagle reflects on Connell’s Clarence House Chase comments: "Barry Connell called it a “Mickey Mouse race” and said he couldn’t see any of those horses having a chance at Cheltenham.
"He couldn’t see it before the race and couldn’t see it afterwards either, saying that if his horse jumps a clear round, they win. That’s strong confidence from Barry, but he’s never short of it."
Johnny Ward said: "I love this stuff, he was saying that he couldn't believe Marine Nationale ran the race he did and that he couldn't see any of these horses winning the Champion Chase."
"He's really refreshing in interviews.
"I'm trying to get Gordon Elliott to go to a preview night and he's says he's only going to do a small number this year, but I am half-buzzing for it, as there is so much to talk about and you need this hype that Barry Connell brings as well."
Marine Nationale
Marine Nationale rapidly made a name for himself over hurdles and is now a serious contender over fences. Trained by Connell, he first came to widespread attention by winning the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, a victory that immediately marked him as one of the standout novice hurdlers of his generation.

Marine Nationale is known for his consistent form, bold jumping, and professional attitude on the track, traits that Connell has praised repeatedly.
He has also been noted for exceeding expectations in races, often outperforming more fancied rivals, which has earned him a reputation as a tough and reliable performer.
Despite being lightly campaigned compared to some rivals, he has already demonstrated championship-winning ability, and if he arrives at events like the Champion Chase in top form, pundits believe he could be very hard to beat.
Beyond his talent, Marine Nationale has helped raise Barry Connell’s profile as a trainer, showcasing Connell’s skill at preparing a horse for the biggest races in National Hunt racing.
Superstar Qualities
Paddy Flood commented on Marine Nationale: "He's looking at the horse every day of the week, and he is a superstar horse really.

"I think where Barry's coming from is that he's never been classed as that superstar, so he's always been the underdog.
"It's about time he started to put his chest out a little bit because the horse is a machine and, going on form, he's definitely the one to beat in Cheltenham."
