Formscan By Gary Carson - LEWIS CARROLL can follow up on his maiden win over course and distance in late March. He was value for a bit more than his winning margin then and looks on a fair mark, off 87, for what is effectively his handicap debut. His absence since the start of the season is a slight concern. That came in testing conditions though and the ground during the summer may have been a factor. Killashee Warrior ran a big race in a competitive event at the Irish Champions Festival and is respected despite being top-weight. Navan winner Chapel Lane is another that has to be considered.

He’s been a frustrating horse. The last day in Naas Robbie (Whearty) rode him and he was almost a runaway, and he’s done that a few days. We’ve done a lot of work with him at home, and we’ve even schooled him over hurdles and fences to settle his head a bit. There was plenty of pace on there today, which was ideal. It’s grand that he hung on anyway. A mile is no problem to him as long as they go a gallop. He’s learning to settle better.

He is from a very good Airlie Stud family and is by Tamayuz who I like, and has sired (stablemate) Jancis. He was bought cheaply (€22,000) because he was a rig but I thought he was good value and told the boys we’d have to be patient. I went back for a maiden because he ran a good race in Killarney the last day and I thought he’d have the experience for a maiden at this time of year.
