The recent sale of Sean Graham’s Cheltenham Rails Pitch for £325,000 to Fitzwilliam Sports, which is headed up by Paul Byrne, has been described as a ‘bold move’ by editor Vincent Finegan.

Byrne, a high-profile racehorse owner, plans to have well-known personality Johnny Dineen as their frontman at the Festival next month, which can further draw loyal punters and enhance the pitch’s appeal.

Prestigious location

A rails pitch is a highly coveted location along the inside rail of the Cheltenham Festival racecourse where bookmakers set up to take bets.

These spots are right at the heart of the action - close to the starting gates, finish line, and grandstands - ensuring maximum visibility to thousands of punters.

Because of this, rails pitches are considered premium positions, offering both financial and branding advantages to whoever occupies them.

The value of a rails pitch comes from more than just location. Being on the rails means a bookmaker can capture a high volume of on-site bets, including large-stake wagers from professional gamblers who often bypass online platforms.

It also provides a powerful marketing opportunity: the pitch becomes a focal point for spectators, TV coverage, and social media content, elevating the bookmaker’s profile during one of the biggest events in National Hunt racing.

Over time, the role of rails pitches has evolved alongside the betting industry.

While online and app-based wagering dominate modern betting, the rails still offer a unique advantage that digital platforms cannot replicate: the social, high-energy atmosphere of Cheltenham week, where on-course presence can translate directly into turnover and brand recognition.

In essence, rails pitches remain a blend of historical prestige and modern business strategy, making them one of the most sought-after assets in National Hunt racing.

Green shoots

Historically, these pitches have been held by families or long-standing bookmakers for generations, which adds a level of prestige and tradition.

For bookmakers, a rails pitch is not just a place to take bets; it’s prime real estate that combines visibility, revenue potential, and status in the racing world.

Speaking on this week’s Irish Angle, Johnny Ward talks about the Fitzwilliam Sports backer:

“I don’t know if Paul (Byrne) has ever taken a drink, he’s certainly been teetotal as long as I’ve known him.

“I do wonder sometimes if, when you don’t get your kicks from a few pints or other vices, you channel that energy into scheming.

“There’s definitely a lot of thought put into this. A lot of people will gravitate towards Johnny Dineen.

“How the Cheltenham ring performs this year will be fascinating. Everything Paul Byrne does - buying horses, campaigning them, or in business is compelling. This is just another example.”

Johnny Ward added: “One amazing stat for me is that Fitzwilliam Bookmakers only just launched their app and website last week, and essentially only around 100 punters make up the core of their business.

“Those aren’t fiver and tenner bettors either. Part of this move, I’d say, is publicity - brand promotion.

“Paul wants more customers but it’s a lot of money. I had written off the betting ring but it will be really intriguing to see how the Cheltenham ring does this year."

Vincent Finegan added: “There seems to be some green shoots in recent months - the racecourse attendances have been up and so have the bookmaker figures on track. Maybe there is some green light there. It’s a bold move”

The Brand

Fitzwilliam Sports is a Dublin‑based independent bookmaker that has built itself around a more personalised, high‑end betting experience compared with many larger mainstream operators.

Established in 2021. It positions itself as a membership‑oriented bookmaker - clients typically join to get access to betting services tailored directly by knowledgeable staff rather than through large call centres.

The firm has also made moves to raise its profile in the racing world.

It secured its first UK sponsorship by partnering with the Goffs London Sale and has sponsored races such as the Fitzwilliam Sports Handicap Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival.

Customer reviews suggest that Fitzwilliam’s personalised approach and competitive odds have resonated well with many users, particularly those who appreciate direct contact with trading staff and a more bespoke betting service.

This niche positioning - combining traditional bookmaking values with modern technology is central to the brand’s identity and growing reputation.
