The opening race of the Cheltenham Festival could also be one of the races of the week. The Supreme Novices' Hurdle, set to kick off at 1.20 on Tuesday, features a host of top-quality hurdlers. In recent times this race has been dominated by Irish bankers but this year looks very different.
Journalist, broadcaster and punter, Johnny Ward, was joined by Tommy Lyons on our first Cheltenham episode of the Irish Edge and they gave their each-way selections in what is a set to be a cracker.

Johnny’s Supreme Novices' Hurdle Tip
This race has so many layers to it. Anything could win it pretty much. That’s the joy of it.
In years gone by you might have had an Irish banker to get the week started, but I don’t think people should be looking for a really hot start tomorrow. If you’re lucky enough to get the winner, you’ll probably get well rewarded.
My selection in the race is going to be Leader D'allier. I thought he was quite breathtaking the last day at Punchestown and the race is working out fine.
He was hard to pull up the last day and I like that. This is a punishing hill at Cheltenham and that sort of effort can stand to you.
You could have a horse you fancy here that runs really well and still finishes fifth. With so many talented young horses, tactics are going to be a massive factor.
Tommy’s Supreme Novices' Hurdle Tip
Talk The Talk is the only Grade 1 winner in the field. I think 5-1 about him is a bit of value to be honest.
He was exceptionally good to win the last day considering he was ridden with the future in mind. Joseph O’Brien said that afterwards, they were thinking about the future of this horse.
He showed savage pace two runs ago before he fell, and that’s the type of pace that gets you out of trouble in a race.
Even when he made ground towards the last hurdle the last day, I thought there was still a lot to do and I was amazed he still got up.
I’d be amazed if he’s not heavily involved at the end.
