Formscan  - Captain Hugo beat Serious Challenge in the Morebattle at Kelso before finishing a respectable second in the Scottish Champion Hurdle when last in action. He could launch a strong challenge on his reappearance, while Le Beau Madrik showed marked improvement in novice company last term and Dan Skelton's handicap debutant could also get involved. However, PIONEER PETE has the more recent form having defied a penalty when landing the odds at Stratford last month and the progressive six-year-old looks on a fair mark back in a handicap.

it was a very good performance and he really jumped and travelled. He handled that ground well and it was a nice performance to do that first-time-out over hurdles against horses with runs. He had a very good level of form on the Flat in England and his last win was in Doncaster on easy groudn so we were hopeful coming here. Gary (Bannon, assistant trainer) said he was in right order. There was a false start and I got a better position after it so it all worked out and I was delighted to get the ride.

He won his maiden hurdle here and he was actually running a respectable race in Cheltenham when he fell two from home. Today off his mark we would have been disappointed if he hadn’t been involved. Sean was pleased with him. Coming down the hill it looked like he was going to be in trouble a bit, but he was tracking Henry’s horse and the gaps appeared for him because he tracked him. He jumped the last well and got on top, so we’re delighted. We thought a nice bit of him coming to his maiden hurdle here and then he obviously disappointed, but I’d say that’s his ground. He wears a tongue-tie for a reason. We won’t be letting him out (to grass).
