Formscan By Michael Graham - Aidan O'Brien's GSTAAD looks very much the one to beat. Last season's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner winner reappeared in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and moved clear with the winner before giving best in the closing stages. Distant Storm, who has been chalked up as second favourite behind Gstaad for this assignment, was some some eight lengths behind him in third at Newmarket, so it is hard to see that form overturned despite the first-time cheekpieces and his solid overall form. Thesecretadversary was fifth behind the aforementioned pair in Newmarket, when keen, but could improve upon that if settling better on home turf, while Karl Burke's Alparslan made all in the Greenham at Newbury and is hunting a cheque.

Alparslan is a lovely colt and we purposely left him for this race after he won his maiden. He’d improved a lot on that, and we’ll throw him into black type races now and see how high we can take him. It was the same at Leicester over seven, he was doing his best work at the end. He’s a lovely big colt. He’s workmanlike at home, he’s not a speed horse, but you never know until you get those horses onto the track and see what is under the engine. He could go for the Horris Hill at the backend in Newbury. He obviously handles a bit of cut in the ground as well. there are some great trainers over here and some great horses, but you’ve got to take them on and should never be afraid of getting beat. I don’t understand why a lot more UK trainers don’t give it a go. There is good prizemoney, particularly this weekend. I love travelling horses and like the challenge of taking on the great trainers whether it be here or in France or wherever. It’s all part of life — you have to give it a go.

my wife was giving out to me after the last time because it was a bonus race (for horses bought at Goffs Orby Book 1 sale) at the Curragh: we missed it, but thankfully got it today. Ben was very happy with him that first day when he didn’t get much of a run and said he was a bit unlucky really, but I think it stood to him. He is back so soon as we want to qualify him for the Goffs Million and that was his big target this year. I’m delighted with the way he won, they are new owners (Maribeth Sandford) from America and this is the first batch of horses they’ve had with me. It’s extra special when you can ring the owners and say you won and extra 50 thousand, so it’s win-win!
