Formscan By Tom Weekes - BALLYGUNNER CASTLE is an able performer and it is hoped he will leave behind a recent fall. A dual bumper winner and placed at Grade 2-level last April, he ran well on chase debut at Punchestown in early December before falling at that venue on New Year’s Eve. He is suited by testing ground and is his yard’s first-string. Spread Boss Ted finished fourth in Cheltenham’s 2024 Albert Bartlett Hurdle but then missed a year. His most recent Punchestown run was satisfactory but would prefer farther. Champagne Jury was well enough held on recent chase debut but is useful and can place. Grade 1-placed hurdler Supersundae’s overall form is inconsistent and was well held on a recent reappearance run.

He’s a fine stamp of a horse. I couldn’t get him to go fast enough in front. He’s not a quick horse and this is a tight track. He’s done well to win in the circumstances, and he has a beautiful pedigree but it’s all three miles. He looks like a staying chaser in time. He’s going on his holidays now and I think there is a lot to look forward to.

He’s a fine big horse and got through that ground well. He looks a big chaser in the making. We don’t have him that long, about six or eight weeks, and he should progress again. I’m not sure what we’ll do with him now, and going for a maiden hurdle might not be the worst idea as he can go chasing sooner rather than later.

He's been unlucky, I think he's a fair horse to honest and I always have done. he has always found a way to get beaten. He just hasn't been straightforward. When he got that fall on the Flat in Punchestown, he was very sore after it and it took him a long, long time to come back. He's definitely a horse that should have won a bumper really. I hope he will go on and I'd say he would like a bit better ground. His jumping was much better, but he was still very strong.

It was a good performance dropping back in trip. He maybe got under one or two hurdles down the back but in fairness he sharpened up as the race went on,. We got to see the improvement we wanted to see after Naas, he was a bit disappointing there and that was a bit more like it today. For a horse with a bit of experience he was still a bit raw but that's nice to see and hopefully he can build on it in the future again. Today at two miles he learned as the race went on and possibly a truly run two miles will suit him.

We had him fit to run, I suppose, in October, but he is a horse that broke down very badly on me as a five-year-old. I have to wait until I get his right ground - he loves it bottomless. I thought they would call it off that day he won in Cork, he can't have it deep enough. I thought it might be just too tacky for him here today because it is quite tacky. He was mighty through it, he absolutely loved it. He's a huge, big horse. If Fairyhouse at Easter turned up minimum soft, he might go there.
