He's a very frustrating sort of a horse - you can see there he has plenty of ability, but has his own mind about everything. Ger Fox does a very good job riding him at home and has him nice and switched off. He probably jumped better when they were going quicker than when they were going slower. He steadied into the last, he's okay when he is in tight. He's not one you trust implicitly but has loads of ability. You'd hope so (reach a higher level) - I wouldn't be surprised if he went to England for a little novice hurdle to teach him a little bit more and maybe scare them off a bit!. Then he is going to have to step up, but that was a good pot and when we spotted it, we said we would have a crack at it. Of course, the man on board can't do anything wrong. He has been getting other rides as well which is important, and it is going to be even more important in a couple of days when he loses the claim. The two lads (Alex and Ben Harvey) are excellent riders, it is just there is so much competition over here and that's the problem. Other guys are looking at him to use him as well, so it is great.

Gavin gave Tassarolo a very good ride and while he has only ridden a few horses for us, he had won a maiden hurdle on this horse and is a talented young rider. Gavin rode Tassarolo the last day and knew him, so we kept riding arrangements the same. It was a great result for me and while it was hard luck on the owners (Final Reminder Syndicate) of the runner-up, both horses ran well. The two horses are very similar and there were a lot of people asking me ‘which one?’ today, but they are similarly rated and really I couldn’t split them. Both were going up in trip but it was just which one would see it out better, and the winner did. Tassarolo is owned by our local publican (in the Full Of Hope Syndicate) and unfortunately one of the members John O’Shea passed away the day the horse won his maiden hurdle. He has a rating of 62 on the Flat so can go back to there too so there are options with him.

He’s only had four runs over hurdles since he won a good pot in Kelso. Every year he’d win on the Flat. He was never going down but he’d just improve a little bit to win. You could set your clock by him as he’d always win once a year. He’s getting a bit older and I’d said I’d chance it. I don’t like running in claimers but he’s at that age and going back to a handicap he’s going to be in no man’s land. He enjoyed that and when he’s enjoying things he can do it very easy. These races give those older horses a chance of going and doing something again. The fact that he had a couple of runs on the Flat, going back over hurdles then he’s just that bit sharper. He travelled a bit easier in the race. I’m delighted with him.

That was good. He’s had a grand campaign. When I saw the race, a three-miler claimer, it was perfect for him,. Any time he goes back into open company he’s not able for it. He’s at that level now. He’s nearly 11 and he’s finding things more difficult. To be fair to the Cody horse he wasn’t getting away from him, they were tired. It’s grand to be able to run him in races like that, he’s not going to last forever and thankfully he’s paying his way. He’s had a good year and has a lot of ones beside his name. He might go to Galway on the Sunday for the three-mile handicap but again he probably won’t be good enough. The owner might be want a day out there. We’re having good fun with him and he’s been a good servant. It think these claiming races are great for trainers that are up against it with horses that are too highly handicapped. You’re prepared to spin the bottle and take a chance. The next thing with him would be rehoming him as a riding horse so at least we can keep running him. They should throw in a couple of more claimers, Gordon (Elliott) likes them, I like them and Denis Hogan likes them.

She was getting the hang of it as she went on and jumped slick over the last couple. Darragh said the quicker they went, the better she jumped. She probably idled a bit in front going up to the line. She goes on any kind of ground, and we’ll have plenty of fun with her over the summer. She’ll mix it with Flat and hurdles. It was great to win over a mile and a half (in Bellewstown) the last day which opens up more options for her.

The only thing I can think of is going up in trip. He ran over two-and-a-half at Sligo one day where he made a bad mistake and should have won. He works like a good horse at home and we always knew he kept a bit for himself on the Flat. His jumping was letting him down earlier on his career as well. He got a few terrible falls and I'd say he lost his confidence as well. We ran him in a few claimers and put him in for E8,000 and we just said if he goes, he goes. I kept telling the lads to get rid of him. He hadn't won since March of 2023 and I just told them to get something else. I knew he had ability and I said to bring him somewhere else either, to see would that work. Thank God neither of those options came to pass!. He is a lovely horse at home and any kid could ride him. He is just a pure rogue. He is handicapped over fences and can go back to Dundalk for those two-mile races as well. He won very easy today so maybe he will go to the next grade over hurdles. There is loads of options for him.
