Jack Handed Repeat Mission

Philip Rothwell fears Native Jack's best days could be behind him as the 13-year-old bids for back-to-back victories in the Sporting Index Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Tuesday.

The Be My Native gelding landed a gamble in the cross-country test last March when beating Spot Thedifference by two lengths, but the trainer is not confident of a repeat performance.

'He's 13 and I think we have seen his best days but we are hoping for a good run and we're very happy with him,' said the County Wicklow-based handler.

'He was gambled on last year but won't be this year. He was backed down from 33-1 into joint-favourite but he won't be doing that this year.

'It will probably be his last season with us as the owner is thinking about taking him to Doncaster Sales in May.

'He'll probably be my only runner at the Festival. I've confirmed four other horses but I don't think they'll get in.'

Native Jack is currently available at a best-priced 14-1 with VC Bet for the Sporting Index Chase next week.
