The Irish Edge with Johnny Ward and Tommy Lyons - Day 4 Tips

Vincent Finegan's Day 4 Tips

    Wrappedupinmay 4.40 Cheltenham Friday

The Irish-trained horses look to be the ones to concentrate on in this Hunters' Chase. Last season's 1-2-3 (Wonderwall, Its On The Line and Willitgoahead) are all back again, but it is a stablemate of last year's winner that makes most appeal. Wrappedupinmay was a fair performer over hurdles when trained by Paul Nicholls, but looks to have taken his form up a notch since joining Sam Curling. Wrappedupinmay has won his two most recent Open Point-to-points in impressive fashion and looks primed for another big run here.

Next Best - Dinoblue - Mares Chase

Dinoblue ran out a very easy winner of this race last season and everything points towards a repeat victory. Her two races so far this season have indicated that she is in at least as good a form as last year and her track experience at Cheltenham is a big factor in her favour against her stablemate and chief rival Spindelberry.

Jalon d’Oudairies can strike in Albert Bartlett

Gordon Elliott has always held JALON D’OUDAIRIES in high regard and he looks an interesting contender for the Albert Bartlett. Third in a Champion Bumper behind last year's winner Jasmin De Vaux, he has improved steadily since switching to hurdles this season. He was hugely impressive at Naas last time out, bolting up by 27 lengths in a manner that suggested both the class and stamina for this three-mile test. He looks a horse with plenty more to offer.

Gaelic Warrior the Gold Cup standard

Willie Mullins will be keen to regain his Gold Cup crown and he relies on the immensely talented GAELIC WARRIOR. The eight-year-old is a versatile operator, having won an Arkle over two miles and a Mildmay at Aintree over three. He arrives here on the back of a strong second to Fact To File in the Irish Gold Cup, finishing ahead of Galopin Des Champs. He wasn't beaten far in the King George earlier this term and this trip should suit him perfectly.

Panda Boy the one to beat in Hunter Chase

The Martin Brassil-trained PANDA BOY brings an excellent profile into the Hunter Chase division. He has been perfect since switching to this sphere, winning both starts in commanding fashion. He stayed on strongly to beat Lifetime Ambition by nine lengths at Thurles before following up with another comfortable four-length success at Naas. If he reproduces the level of those recent performances, he has every chance of coming out on top here.

Enda McElhinney's Cheltenham Tips Day 4

Gaelic Warrior to battle to victory

Mullins has won the Gold Cup four times since 2019 and GAELIC WARRIOR looks to have plenty in his favour. The son of Maxios started his campaign by beating Fact To File in the John Durkan and wasn't beaten far when third in a sprint finish to the King George. He was second to a rejuvenated Fact To File in the Irish Gold Cup since, and having beaten Grey Dawning in the Aintree Bowl last spring, his proven Festival form is a major bonus.

Don’t discount Grey Dawning

Dan Skelton’s yard has been in flying form this week and GREY DAWNING appears to have a massive chance of providing the icing on the cake. A former Grade 1 novice chase winner at this meeting, he looks a much-improved horse this season. His dominant victory in the Betfair Chase back in November was a Gold Cup standard performance and he should be right in the mix at the finish.

Laurence Morter's Cheltenham Tips Day 4

County Hurdle - Sinnatra @ 16/1

Novices are potentially less exposed than seasoned handicappers and can therefore have an advantage. Dan Skelton does well in this race and Sinnatra looks like an interesting angle. He absolutely bolted up in a maiden hurdle at Sandown last month and horses don’t often win by 55 lengths. The step up in trip didn’t work out at Huntingdon next time but handicaps could be the way to go and there should be more to come.

Mares’ Chase - Spindleberry @ 10/3

Another race that Mullins has locked down, he trains the first two in the betting for the Mares’ Chase and Spindleberry has progressed into a very useful mare. A Grade 1 winner as a novice, things didn’t quite go to plan in the Irish Gold Cup last time out, but this is obviously easier and the drop back in trip will suit.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle - Thedeviluno @ 6/1

This race often becomes a stiff test of stamina and can be a real slog if the ground is on the soft side. Proven stamina over three miles is a massive positive with that in mind and Paul Nolan’s progressive gelding Thedeviluno fits the bill. He was an impressive winner of the River Don Novices’ Hurdle at Doncaster and that performance indicates that he’s well up to running a big race at this level too.

Gold Cup - Gaelic Warrior @ 6/1

This is probably the most open Gold Cup in a couple of years and the fact that there are two British horses in the first three in the betting is unusual. That being said, Mullins’ Gaelic Warrior could be the one to side with. He won the John Durkan on seasonal debut but hasn’t been at his best in two starts since. His victory in the Bowl at Aintree last season is amongst the best form on offer and the stiff test of stamina will play to his strengths.

Festival Challenge Cup - Stattler @ 12/1

Stattler won the National Hunt Chase here at the Cheltenham Festival back in 2022 and, although his career went on the wrong trajectory afterwards, he has returned to a fair level of form in hunter chases this season. Stamina obviously isn’t an issue and having won in good style at Fakenham last time out, he looks ready for a return to this sort of grade.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle - A Pai De Nom @ 8/1

Novices have an excellent record in this race over the last decade and the Dan Skelton-trained A Pai De Nom is very much of interest. He already has experience in a big field handicap, having run in the Lanzarote, and that experience will stand him in good stead. Skelton’s six-year-old was an impressive winner at Newbury this month and further progress is anticipated.
