Good goods in small packages - Mary Frances
Well-bred mare Mary Frances registered a 25/1 win under Sean Flanagan in the opening Book Online At www.limerickraces.ie Mares Maiden Hurdle at Greenmount Park today. Sat 18th Mar
The brother Michael, who was 63 yesterday, rides her out every morning - he'll often say to let the young lads ride her and I'd say 'no, you know her' and she gives 110 percent every morning and at the races,. We are mad to get black-type into her but all those mares races are over 2m4f and there is no three-mile black-type race for her unless she takes on the geldings - unless she goes over fences. If myself and Sean Flanagan had our way she'd jump fences but I don't think John (O'Mahony, owner) wants to. I'm delighted for John because they had some misfortune lately and Mary Frances is named after his mother. I'm delighted for the O'Mahony family as it is a big boost for them and I hope they're smiling. God only knows what she'll get after today and if it was really soft I wouldn't mind going back to the Galmoy Hurdle again next year - she wants bog. we must be the only yard who ride out with lights - we start every morning at 5.30am and have them finished at 7am and then I go to work in Coolmore. We installed seven or eight floodlights and we have 12 riding out.
Martin Hassett
I knew she had a serious chance and you can forget about her last two runs,.
Martin Hassett
When you're doing a double, you have to do it in your home track! That's my first double and she do it in style and never came off the bridle. She's a mudlark despite being only a pony and when Robbie Power rode her the last day, he said the day when it's almost unraceable, is the day she's going to win and he was right. It is hard to imagine because she is so small. She is a half-sister to Jazz Messenger and we'll take it race by race with her but will look for black-type eventually. I've only four horses in training and work full-time in Coolmore so it's a family operation. Last week was very frustrating and I spent five nights in a row getting up every hour to clear the gallop with the tractor but still we ended up missing three days exercising the horses. I was going to work as well and thank god the schools were closed because my young lad stayed on until 2am one morning and then I got up and did it then. The elements did eventually beat us and there's now a foot of snow on the gallop. This is great for everyone though and now we've a double up, we might feel like real trainers!
Martin Hassett
Ye might be shocked but I'm not as her run at Clonmel (hurdles debut) was a good education and she never missed a beat today. She's only a pony and it's at Dingle she should be! She is small and you'd be half embarrassed coming here but I was very positive after her run the last day. She is a Mini with a Ferrari engine - she is small but is tough and genuine and is related to Jazz Messenger. She wants that ground.
Martin Hassett
