Uncle Pat
Uncle Pat had been running consistently well and was good today. He had run well in the National Trial, and in a maiden hurdle, here and obviously likes the place. He ran well in the Ulster National recently and those extended trips suit him really well and he also likes good ground. The lads have said that the middle of the course is more watered, so going either on the inside or outside was the place to be. The fresher ground is on the outside although Paul (Townend) said he was flat out in the early part of the race but stayed going at the pace he was comfortable at. A lot of horses don't stay those extended trips but our two (Uncle Pat and runner-up Fishery Lane) do. Today was the grand plan, as was the Ulster Nation and the National Trial!

It’s marvellous and we’ve only got around 15 jumpers so it’s great to be back in this winner’s enclosure. It’s probably about a third of what we used to have and we have around 45 Flat horses, but this is just great. I have had all his family and he was bred by a very good friend of mine from my childhood, Christopher McKeever. This fellow is the best of him and I had a feeling he would handle the ground as he is light. I’d say he has plenty of speed so if he’s back here next year it would be over two miles. His jumping needs some ironing out but we can work on that now.

On a day we’ve said goodbye to Constitution Hill (over jumps), it’s nice to come straight in and a bring on a new one we hope could be a star.

My nephew rang him (Maguire) this morning because he rides her the whole time. We said ‘if you get done for being late we won’t mind’ because once she hits the front she actually stops. What could he do. He said she didn’t travel down the back but the way she battled back! I’m speechless, it’s the first time ever!. This is for all the lads at home. It’s not just me, it’s all the boys at home. We don’t ever ring a jockey beforehand, but my nephew Michael rides her the whole time and he knows her so we just said we’d let him know that if he gets done on the line for being late we wouldn’t lose a night’s sleep over it. His hand was drawn; he was just cruising. It looked down the back like she was struggling but she just devoured the ground. She came home like a train but in saying that she had to battle at the same time. I still think we don’t know how good she is. The way we train them at home, up the hill, we don’t ever drill them. She’s working with Battle Of Ridgeway, who runs tomorrow, and he’s a good yardstick. I’d give him a serious shout tomorrow. It’s our first graded winner and it’s special, especially at the Dublin Racing Festival. She’s going to be entered in everything but whether we go to Cheltenham or wait for the mares’ races, we’ll see. The young lad warned me ‘don’t mention Cheltenham!’ so we’ll probably wai

I’m trying to keep it low-key at the moment, but we think she’s special. . We went to Fairyhouse and took on the geldings, and I wasn’t one bit surprised with how well she ran. . The half-brother Mulcahys Hill was a serious horse, and I think she’ll match him. . Pa wanted to go point-to-pointing with her as she’s absolutely dynamite to jump. She’s probably as good as what we’ve had in the yard.

The Mourne Rambler
We have him about two months. Philip owned a half share in him with Paddy Turley all along and they kept talking about how good he was,. They ran him and he was second and Philip bought the half share off him and sent him down. I didn’t do too much with him as he was pretty fit, I was trying to keep him fresh as much as anything. I’d say he’ll come on a good bit from the run. He seems to stay quite well. I would have thought that they’d be pretty keen to bring him to Cheltenham and maybe back here for the Dublin racing festival. We might even leave it like that and go to Cheltenham with him how he is. He’ll have a couple of more runs this season and then go jumping. We’ll see how he comes out of this and we certainly won’t rush him back anyway. There was a lot of chat about Willie’s and other horses. When a bumper breaks up like that you never really know if it’s a good race or not. We think he’s not a bad horse anyway so we’re happy enough.
